Description:

This eighteen million dollar project involves the building of a new bridge, rehab of the existing bridge and limited amount of  new road construction.

The new bridge will be 2710 feet long and consists of 29 spans.  The superstructure is further broken down to 5 units (13 spans) of Florida Bulb Tee concrete beams (FBT-72) for a total of 1430 feet.  Spanning both channels is 2 units (6 spans) of steel girders for a total length of 1280 feet. The main span is 280 feet long over each channel.  The last unit (east side, 8 spans) consists of flat slab for 245 feet.

While the clearance of both bridges will be 65 feet, the new bridge will be four feet higher at its highest point.  This is due to taller steel girders.  The new bridge is also 605 feet longer, thus at any given point the new bridge will be higher than the old bridge by more than four feet.

This bridge is rather unique that it uses two different pile methodologies (Bearing and Friction Freeze), five different size footings, and three types of superstructure (steel girder, concrete beam and flat slab construction). However, the most unique part of this project is the use of Vibro-Columns as a soil stabilization method for the east approach.
