BUILDING THE MIGHTY MAC

VIDEO

by Mark Howell

Back Cover Review
In only 42 months, engineers, politicians, architects, foundation workers, and iron workers were able to construct "the bridge that couldn't be built" across the Straits of Mackinac. Spanning five miles of some of the most treacherous waters in the world, the Mackinac Bridge connected for the first time Michigan's two peninsulas. Filmmaker Mark Howell takes you back to the 1950's and presents the story of how The Mackinac Bridge became a reality, and one of Michigan's greatest icons. "Building The Mighty Mac" includes extremely rare archival 16mm color footage of the bridge under construction, as well as breathtaking new footage. Audio recordings of bridge designer Dr. David B. Steinman, Senator P. M. Brown, and Governor G. Mennan "Soapy" Williams, help bring the past back to life as this incredible story is presented for all generations to enjoy.

BridgePros Review

This video gets a 10 out of 10 from BridgePros.  This reviewer who grew up not 90 miles from the Mackinac Bridge has found this video to be a great resource of information and video he has never seen before. The old footage that Mark Howell (A fellow Michigander) found and brought to life is priceless.

From interviews with a former iron worker on the bridge to video of the first car going over the bridge, Mark Howell brings the history of the "Big Mac" to life.

This video belongs in the collection of anyone who loves bridges or wants to learn how old timers built this $100 million (5 lives) magnificent bridge.  This suspension bridge from anchor block to anchor block is still the longest in the world.
