New Bridge
construction methods could influence future projects
Watch Video
A construction project in
Central Texas may revolutionize the way bridge construction is done
throughout the nation. The Texas Department of Transportation is
reconstructing the interchange at I-35 and Highway 6/Loop 340.
Part of that project is building four new bridges, but
it's the way crews are building those over-passes that has some talking.

CARQUINEZ BRIDGE TO OPEN NOV. 15
The new Carquinez Bridge, the first new Bay Area span since 1984, will open Nov. 15,
Caltrans Director Jeff Morales announced Wednesday just before he toured the finishing
touches. It was his chance to kick the tires, so to speak, on the suspen-sion bridge

EADS BRIDGE FINALLY REOPENS!
Opened nine years before the better-known Brooklyn Bridge,
St. Louis' Eads Bridge for more than a century did yeoman's work - until age caught up
with the span that ranks among the oldest Mississippi River crossings.
More than 11 years after it was closed for repairs, the 3,563-foot national landmark
that once transfixed poet Walt Whitman marked its 129th birthday Friday as America
celebrated its own.
The bridge, which connects St. Louis to Illinois, reopened on Independence Day, though
only to pedestrians and bicyclists the first couple of days. The bridge will open to
motorists Monday. For BridgePros Project Page click here.

Kiewit Apparent Low Bidder for Hood
Canal Floating Bridge
Kiewit-General of Poulsbo submitted the apparent low bid of $204 million to repair and
replace the 42-year-old Hood Canal Bridge.
Bids were opened at 11 a.m. today, June 18, at the Washington State Department of
Transportation headquarters. The Kiewit-General bid appears to be within WSDOTs
budgeted amount for the project. The department will now initiate a bid verification
process that will result in a bid award announcement within the next two weeks.
The bid opening is the culmination of years of work, said Ron Lewis,
project manager. This is a major milestone for WSDOT engineers and staff, local
community leaders, resource agencies and political supporters.
In November 1997 the Washington State Transportation Commission approved funding for
design work and public involvement efforts for replacement of the east half of the State
Route (SR) 104 Hood Canal Bridge.
The eastern half of the floating bridge was originally constructed in 1961 and is
nearing the end of its structural life. A severe marine climate, accelerating
deterioration, draw span unreliability and a desire to bring the bridge up to higher
design standards makes the east-half Hood Canal Bridge one of the Washington State
Department of Transportations (WSDOT) highest priority bridges for replacement in
its 3,150 bridge inventory. For BridgePros Project Page click here.

TINY SPACE IS KEY FOR BIG BRIDGE

The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge across the
Potomac River is a huge project that will require 6,500 workers, 140 million pounds of
steel and almost $1 billion to complete. But its engineers are worried about a much
smaller number: 1/8th of an inch. The Wilson project is particularly tricky for
three reasons, engineers say. First, it's 12 lanes wide, one of the widest drawbridges
ever built. Second, the pivot points on each side of the draw span are 270 feet apart,
making it one of the longest draw spans ever built. Finally, the support structure under
the bridge is an unusual, complicated V-shape - a difficult combination of engineering and
aesthetics. "You're at the limit of what you can do with this type of
technology," said Mike Bonin, the project's chief engineer.

OKLAHOMA BRIDGE TRAGEDY
It was Memorial Day weekend, and millions of
Americans hit the road. For travelers on a busy stretch of Oklahoma highway, the road
suddenly disappeared. Where a bridge once stood, spanning the Arkansas River, there was a
gaping hole and a 60-foot drop. One after another, drivers were plunging into the water
below. With the help of witnesses Dateline revisits this deadly accident. But
thats only the beginning of our story. As youll see, what seemed like a freak
accident at the time is far more common than you think. The problem isnt whats
going over the bridge, but under it. NBCs Hoda Kotb reports. For full

WILSON BRIDGE BID BELOW ESTIMATES
Bids on the largest contract in the construction of the
new Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge came in well below the state's estimate yesterday, to
the relief of highway officials who were able to declare the project on time and under
budget.

only a single company bid on the main contract to build the bridge that carries Interstate
95 over the Potomac River. That bid, at $860 million, was almost double what the state
expected to pay. For full article from the

to span the East River. Designed by Leffert L. Buck and Henry Hornbostel, it had taken
over seven years to complete. Built to alleviate traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge and to
provide a link between Manhattan and the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the 1,600 foot
Williamsburg Bridge was the world's longest suspension bridge until the 1920s.

TACOMA NARROWS UPDATE
A group that objects to the state charging tolls to pay
for a second Tacoma Narrows Bridge has filed another lawsuit - one that could further
delay the project and drive up costs.
Citizens Against Tolls, led by Gig Harbor resident Randy
Boss, filed the lawsuit late Friday in Thurston County Superior Court. It claims the state
should have asked for competitive bids from multiple contractors instead of awarding the
$615 million job last month to Tacoma Narrows Constructors, whose parent companies have
been working on the project for several years.
State officials say they weren't required to ask for
construction bids because the project was designed and will be built under terms of a 1993
law that allows the state to work with a single company. For full article from

The state will study an additional Potomac River crossing to alleviate
highway gridlock in Northern Virginia, Gov. Mark R. Warner announced on a monthly radio
show yesterday. Mr. Warner said on WTOP 1500 Radio's "Ask the Governor" in
Washington that the $400,000 study would consider the construction of a
"Techway" bridge as part of an outer beltway that would provide commuters
another route for moving between Virginia and Maryland over the Potomac. For full

world. The bridge will be 22 km long and will connect Kuwait City with the development
region Subiyah, which lies across the bay. The bridge will be a low-level bridge with a
number of embankments near the coast. To allow ships passage to the Kuwait harbour the
bridge will be suspended over the channel. It is expected that the bridge will be
completed in five to six years. For more information on this bridge project click on

IBC Announces The Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal
The bridge industry, as well as the International Bridge Conference, lost a good
friend on March 20th with the untimely passing of Eugene C. Figg Jr., President and
Director of Bridge Art at Figg Engineering Group.
Throughout his career, Mr. Figg was instrumental in helping bridges become realities
for many communities. He led the bridge design industry by involving community
representatives in decisions about the design of their bridges -- referred to as
"design charettes". These public meetings resulted in communities embracing
bridge designs that were truly reflective of each community's vision. His aesthetic
approach has led to signature bridges throughout America that have been on the covers of
89 magazines and received over 154 national awards.
To commemorate his spirit and vision, the International Bridge Conference is
pleased to announce the creation of the Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal For Signature Bridges
-- which will recognize a single recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering
that, through vision and innovation, provides an icon to the community for which it was
designed.
The first Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal For Signature Bridges will be awarded on
Monday, June 10, 2002 during the IBC's Annual Awards Luncheon. It joins with the George S. Richardson Medal
created to honor a Single Recent Outstanding Achievement in Bridge Engineering, the John A. Roebling Medal
created to honor Lifetime Achievement and the Gustav Lindenthal Medal
created to honor a Single Recent Outstanding Achievement that best demonstrates
innovation coupled with esthetic merit, harmony with the environment or successful
community participation in recognizing the best of world's bridge projects and
engineers. (Information Provided by IBC for more information on the International Bridge
Conference Click Here.)

Transit officials are making one last bid to resurrect a 13-year-old plan that would
add another bridge to Pittsburgh's skyline and steer traffic through a long-empty railroad

Bidding on
Wilson Bridge under investigation
Maryland and federal authorities are examining why the state received only one bid to
build the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge's twin spans -- for $373 million over budget -- a
Maryland lawmaker and two top state officials said yesterday. Maryland officials
also announced that they hope to control the bridge's escalating price and limit the
lengthening delays by rebidding the building in smaller chunks. That should draw more
competition and drive down the price, the officials said. (as reported

Building a better Bridge
The new east span of the Bay Bridge is a study in superlatives.
At $2.6 billion -- more than a $1 billion a mile -- it's the most expensive public
works project in state history. Building it will take 100,000 tons of steel and 67,000
workers, making it the largest ongoing bridge project in the Western Hemisphere. (as reported by: Matthew Barrows,

Bridge Plan Looks Familiar
TREASURE ISLAND -- The new causeway bridge probably will look a lot like the rest of
the city's new buildings. It will have a tower that resembles the downtown clock and the
pavilion on Sunset Beach. Designs for a new bridge come in three tiers: a
$47-million, no-frills style; a $55-million design with some bells and whistles; or an
$80-million "signature" model made one-of-a-kind. (as reported
