The construction of 402
double-lane steel bridges in the poorest and remotest barangays in the country, 30 of
which are expected to be completed March next year.
The bridge contruction project under the "Tulay ni Erap sa Barangay" project
will spur local economies from a merely subsistence base to a now-thriving market
economies by linking poor farming communities to markets.
The barangay bridge construction project will not only improve existing local
infrastructure and will evidently result in creating more and better business
opportunities in these areas.
30 pilot bridges constructed in each of the 30 provinces across the country will be
completed before the end of March next year and are expected to be inaugurated by
President Estrada in April, 2001.
The 30 pilot bridges, equally divided among Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, will be
immediately turned over to the beneficiary local government units which which will help in
the bridges' maintenance.
The 10 barangay bridges to be built in Luzon are the Potot Bridge in Bauang, La Union;
Batakil Bridge in Pozzurobio in Pangasinan; Kanggas Bridge in Tuba, Benguet; Hilario
Bridge in Quezon, Nueve Ecija; Finiones Bridge in Mataas na Kahoy, Maasin Norte in
Candelaria, Quezon; Masalong-salong Bridge in Mercedes, Camarines Norte; and Pantayan
Bridge in Ragay, Camarines Sur.
The 10 bridges to be constructed in the Visayas are the Antipolo Bridge in Bajay,
Aklan; Balison Bridge in Pilar, Capiz; Baluangan Bridge in Jordan, Guimaras; Indakpan
Bridge in Ilog, Negros Occidental; Lapacan Norte Bridge in Inabanga, Bohol; Martilo Pangca
Bridge in La Libertad, Negros Oriental; Laguna Bridge in Aloguinsan, Ceub; Borongan Bridge
in Oras, Eastern Samar; New Rizal Bridge in Cataman, Northern Samar; New Rizal Bridge in
Cataman, Northern Samar; and Mapula Bridge in Kalbiran, Southern Leyte.
In Mindanao, the 10 bridges are the Abong-Abong Bridge in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del
Sur; Camanggaan Bridge in Maluso, Basilan; Micayabas Bridge in Maramag, Bukidnon; Tapurok
Bridge in Opol, Misamis Oriental; Masagana Bridge in Alabel, Saranggani; Manual San Isidro
Bridge in Kiblawan, Davao Del Sur; Tuael Bridge in President Roxas, North Cotabato; Ankil
I Bridge in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato; Billa Ondayon Bridge in Bayugan, Agusan del Sur;
and Mamis Bridge in Barobo, Surigao del Sur.
The project is being implemented by the Department of Interior and Local Government and
local government units through a concessional loan package from the United Kingdom.
