PROJECT OVERVIEW

In St. Augustine, Florida the Bridge of Lions has carried traffic across the Matanzas River since 1927.  In 1981 the Florida Department of Transportation discovered a number of structural problems with the bridge during a routine inspection.  When the FDOT recommended building a new bridge, there was a strong protest from many of the local residents and historic preservation groups. To date, numerous repairs have been made to this bridge.  Follow the news articles to the left to see whether the Nation's Oldest City will receive a new bridge or restore the existing bridge - a bridge many residents consider a national treasure.
