PROJECT OVERVIEW
This bridge project when finished will result in the longest bridge in North Carolina at 5.2 miles.  Balfour Beatty Construction, Inc. of Atlanta, GA (A UK based company) was awarded the contract in April 1998 for $89 million dollars. The bridge will be finished in November 2001. The construction management team Team Manteo is led by NCDOT with help from consulting firms HNTB, Barbara H. Mulkey Engineers (BHME), and Transite Consulting Engineers (TCE).

This bridge uses a fairly new technique of building bridges for the main channel.
A three-span, post tensioned, continuous unit spans the main navigational channel. This unit is comprised of (2) - 1981mm Post-tensioned Concrete Girders - Haunch Segments, (2) - 1981mm Post-tensioned Concrete Girders - End Segments, and (1) Drop-in Segment that spans the main channel.  This technique has also been used on the SR312 Bridge in St. Augustine Florida along with the new design-build bridge getting ready to be constructed in the pan handle of Florida.  For more information on this type of bridge construction contact support@bridgepros.com.
