New Bridge is taking shape.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The existing Hathaway Bridge is currently being replaced by two 80' wide segmental bridges which will link Panama City with Panama City Beach on the gulf coast of Florida.  This Project is being constructed by a Design Build team which includes: Granite Construction Company, HNTB, and Reynolds, Smith & Hills CS.  The project which began in Oct., 2000 should be open to traffic by May of 2004.

 

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS AS OF JANUARY, 2002:

SUMMER 2001

  • Pile driving from west to east, on north side of existing bridge.
  • Construction of Pier columns, from west to east.
  • Assembly of Erection Gantry on northwest end of existing bridge.

FALL/WINTER 2001

  • Delineate access to US 98 from Bayshore Dr. to signal at USNCSS entrance, close Carolynn Ave. entrance.
  • Construction of approach earthwork for west side
  • Pile driving from west to east, on north side of existing bridge.
  • Construction of Pier columns, from west to east.
  • Segment erection, from west to east.

SPRING 2002

  • Construction of approach earthwork for east side.
  • Excavate Pond for Hathaway and Thomas Dr. by Woodlawn neighborhood.
  • Pile driving from west to east, on north side of existing bridge.
  • Construction of Pier columns, from west to east.
  • Segment erection, from west to east.

SUMMER/FALL 2002

  • Completion of Pile driving.
  • Construction of Pier columns, from west to east.
  • Segment erection, from west to east.
  • Construct roadway tie-in to new Westbound Bridge.

 SPRING/FALL 2003

  • Segment erection for Eastbound Bridge.
  • Construct approaches and roadway for Eastbound Bridge.
  • Demolition of existing bridge.

SPRING 2004

  • Relocate all traffic to new Westbound Bridge (northern bridge).
  • Complete Segment erection for Eastbound Bridge.
  • Open new Eastbound Bridge.
  • Complete all activities.

PROJECT LIMITS

  • Roadway construction starts at the most easterly driveway to the Marina for Westbound or 250 foot west of existing boat ramp for Eastbound.
  • Roadway construction ends at the driveway to the "No Name Lounge".

  • Westbound Length – 3814 feet.
  • Eastbound Length – 3383 feet.
  • Maximum height –85 feet.
  • Maximum span -330 feet.
  • Horizontal clearance -287 feet.
  • Vertical clearance -65 feet.

QUANTITY FIGURES

Concrete piles – 60-inch diameter, hollow piles

    • Average weight per foot –1300 lbs.
    • Average length per each –115 feet.
    • Quantity required –220 each.
    • Max. Capacity -1550 tons.

  • 20,200 cubic yards.
  • 12 million lbs.
