PROJECT OVERVIEW
High-Point Rendel and Hyundai Join
Forces To 'Twin' Jindo Grand Bridge In South Korea
The turnkey competition to 'twin' the Jindo Grand Bridge in South Korea
has been won by Hyundai, the Korean contractor, assisted by High-Point
Rendel, the international business management and technology consultant.
The two companies were originally involved together in building the first
Jindo Bridge which, when completed in 1984, had the longest cable stay
span outside Europe.
Now High-Point Rendel will assist with the design and construction of a
twin bridge alongside the existing two-lane structure to double the
traffic capacity between Jindo Island and the south west corner of the
Korean mainland.
The new steel bridge, with a central span of 345 metres and 70 metre spans
at either end, will virtually replicate the existing bridge with its 'A'
frame towers and two-lane carriageway.
The turnkey competition to design and construct the twin bridge was placed
earlier this year by the Korean Ministry of Construction &
Transportation.
High-Point Rendel, together with two local design companies, was engaged
by Hyundai Engineering and Construction to carry out the necessary
engineering services for the competition and, if successful, to provide
further engineering services for completion of construction.
The tender submission included site investigation, route option studies,
improved approach highway alignment and selection of preferred crossing
location and form of construction, followed by preliminary design.
It was concluded that a near identical bridge, aligned as close as
possible to the existing bridge was the optimum solution.
The project is now proceeding to detailed design.
Since co-operating on the first Jindo Bridge, High-Point Rendel and
Hyundai have worked on the rebuilding of the Songsu Bridge in Korea's
capital Seoul and several other major bridges in Korea.
