PROJECT OVERVIEW

After years of planning, work began January, 2000 on a $190 million project to widen the bridge, including the construction of a new span by late 2002 and the addition of a lane and two emergency shoulders in each direction.

In the short run, construction may cause further delays, but mostly overnight and during the weekend, Caltrans engineers say. In the long run, they say, the project should improve the flow of traffic on a bridge that has become increasingly important to the Bay Area's economy because of its proximity to several key cities and airports.

BICC said Balfour Beatty won a $113 million contract to widen the San Mateo-Hayward bridge to six lanes from four. For more information there is a link to the San Mateo Bridge Retrofit project - Caltrans OVERVIEW
