Hell Gate Bridge - Bronx-Queens, New York

Construction was underway in 1912 on this 3.2 mile, 5.15 km long viaduct , which still today carries high-speed trains from Boston to New York.  The Hell Gate bridge, completed in 1916, was the longest steel-arch span in the world.  With a span length of 977 ft., 298 meters, the bridge crossed the East River at Hell Gate, in New York.

 

Sydney Harbour Bridge - Sydney, Australia

The Syndey Harbour Steel Arch Bridge was completed in 1932 after 9 years of construction.  The erection of the main span was one of the greatest engineering feats of all time.  The two halves of the arch were built out from each abutment with 128 steel cables to hold them in place.

 

Bayonne Bridge - New York

The Bayonne Bridge was designed by Othmar Ammann and opened to traffic on November 15,1931. The bridge was awarded a prize for the most beautiful steel arch bridge of 1931 by American Institute for Steel Construction.
